' New Moon ' Shatters Opening Day Record

' New Moon ' Shatters Opening Day Record
Claiming the record for the biggest one-day gross, The Twilight Saga: New Moon raked in an estimated $72.7 million on approximately 8,500 screens at 4,024 sites. The Dark Knight was the previous title holder with $67.2 million on around 9,300 screens at 4,366 sites.

New Moon's first day more than doubled that of its predecessor Twilight, which debuted to $36 million on around 6,000 screens at 3,419 sites. Twilight's first weekend wound up at $69.6 million, which was also less than New Moon's first day. Due to fans storming theaters on its opening day, Twilight's first weekend was heavily Friday-loaded, leading to much lower grosses for Saturday ($21.3 million) and Sunday ($12.4 million). The fan fervor was even more intense for New Moon, so the picture will not maintain Friday's pace throughout the weekend.

New Moon's $72.7 million first day included an estimated $26.3 million from its midnight opening, which was also a record. The Dark Knight made $18.5 million on its midnight opening, which means it generated more business after its midnight showings ($48.7 million) than New Moon did ($46.4 million). The Dark Knight still holds the record for biggest weekend (Friday-Saturday-Sunday) ever: $158.4 million.

Also debuting, The Blind Side posted a strong estimated $10.9 million on approximately 4,100 screens at 3,110 sites, ranking as the highest-grossing opening day ever for a sports drama. 2012 plummeted 65 percent from last Friday to an estimated $8.1 million, lifting its total to $89.8 million in eight days. Precious expanded into nationwide release (629 theaters) and boasted a solid estimated $3.6 million, bringing its total to $14 million in 15 days. Meanwhile, Planet 51 opened to a modest estimated $3.15 million on around 3,400 screens at 3,035 sites.

Fueled by New Moon, Friday set another milestone: the first time the Top Ten movies tallied over $100 million in a single day. All told, the Top Ten movies grossed an estimated $104 million. The previous high, not coincidentally, was the day The Dark Knight opened, July 18, 2008, which came in at $97.5 million.

Anne Hathaway for Spider-Man 4 ?

Anne Hathaway for Spider-Man 4 ?
Anne Hathaway is the latest name attached to a possible role in Spider-Man 4.

The way things are going, just about every actress will have been linked to the latest Spidey franchise outing by the time the thing actually starts shooting.

We've been through Romola Garai, Rachel McAdams and, even more recently, Julia Stiles , who was reported to have met the film's casting team.

And now Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke is reporting that Anne Hathaway has been approached for a starring role, but isn't replacing Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane.

So the next possible black cat contender steps into the ring. Fifteen bazillion actresses enter, only one can leave with the role - assuming Black Cat is even in the movie to begin with.

And of course Hathaway is being considered - she's a name actress with a proven track record.

Ryan Reynolds up for TMI

Ryan Reynolds up for TMI
Clearly figuring that the comic chemistry of Anna Faris and Ryan Reynolds worked in Just Friends, Universal wants to pair them for TMI.

TMI - " too much information " - will focus on a couple who discover that while honesty is usually the best policy for a healthy relationship, learning too much about your significant other or their habits can be a dangerous thing.

Currently, that's all the info on the film, besides the fact that Kirsten Smith and Marc Klein have penned the script and Reynolds will be an executive producer.

Since it doesn't yet have a director, TMI will have to wait for Reynolds to finish up work on Green Lantern.

France Goes Ahead, Makes Clint Eastwood's Day

France Goes Ahead, Makes Clint Eastwood's Day
Clint Eastwood always could command an audience. Now he has the title to prove it.

This morning, French President Nicolas Sarkozy not only welcomed the Oscar winner into the French Legion of Honor, but elevated him to a ranking normally out of bounds for foreigners—that of commander.

The honor is one of the nation's highest and is reserved for those who have made great cultural contributions to the country, a point not lost on Eastwood, who referred to France as his "second home" and to Sarkozy, jokingly, as " my president."

" This is a wonderful honor," he said. " It is just a great pleasure for me. I really love France. I love movies, and I love the appreciation that the French people have for movies."

The 79-year-old doesn't plan on wasting any time in seeing how much leeway his hard-earned credential can give him.

" As a commander of the arts and letters, I think I will go out on the streets of France today and throw my weight around," he said.
